What is Sexual Assault:
Sexual assault includes any action causing another person to engage in sexual relations by force, threat, duress, or coercion. It is any unwanted sexual activity. This can include rape, attempted rape and any other sexual act. It is the unwanted touching of another person without consent. Sexual violence an also be non-physical behaviors, like sharing sexual images/videos or sexting without consent. Any man or woman may be the victim of sexual assault.
Statistics:
According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline:
- An average of 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner
- Nearly 1 in 5 women (18.3%) and 1 in 71 men (1.4%) have been raped in their lifetime
- More than half (51.1%) of female victims of rape, report being raped by an intimate partner) and 40.8% report being raped by an acquaintance
- Approximately 13% of women and 6% of men will experience sexual coercion in their lifetime
